About the Event

His Excellency Roy Edward Campbell, Jr., Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, will deliver the invocation at our event with Michael Steele, MSNBC Analyst and Former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, serving as Master of Ceremonies.

Community change-makers Kathy and Ed Quinn will receive the Mary McGrory Advocacy Award; and longtime St. Ann's volunteers Trudy Conrad and Luke Hester will each be honored with the Michele Heidenberger Volunteer Award for their respective volunteer service benefiting St. Ann's families.

Each year, proceeds from Hope Blossoms help St. Ann’s Center provide transitional housing and extensive support programming to families experiencing homelessness. Mothers are offered counseling, mentoring, life skills and parenting classes, opportunities for further education, and employment coaching. Children – both in residence and from the community – benefit from our on-site Child Care Center, which also includes an Early Head Start program.

Hello from St. Ann’s Center! Can you believe March is here already? The Lenten season has begun, the first cherry blossoms have flowered, and the Washington Nationals will soon open their season.

Remarkably, this week also spanned Black History Month and Women’s History Month – two occasions with special relevance for St. Ann’s Center. We remember and celebrate the legacies of those who came before us, while simultaneously recognizing and celebrating the young women writing their own stories today at St. Ann’s.

Even if I tried, I could never fit all the Women’s History-makers who have impacted St. Ann’s Center in a single message! Still, I’d like to share briefly about one pioneering woman whose legacy continues to influence St. Ann’s and the families residing with us.

Mary McGrory (1918 – 2004) was a trailblazing journalist at the Washington Star – and later, The Washington Post – at a time when few women worked in newspapers. Mary wrote over 8,000 columns in her brilliant career, and in 1975 became the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for commentary.

Mary was also a dedicated friend to St. Ann’s, serving as our “First Official Volunteer.” She maintained this role for over fifty years, volunteering weekly to help children with schoolwork and organize field trips and other fun outings for them. Mary also hosted her famous “St. Ann’s Christmas Parties,” which she sometimes got U.S. Presidents to attend!

Near the end of her life, Mary’s generosity helped to fund the Mary Gloria Room at St. Ann’s Center, which opened in 2000 and continues to serve as a reading and play space for our families. The room is named after the children’s nickname for Mary, since they could never pronounce “McGrory.”

We continue to honor Mary’s influence through the Mary McGrory Advocacy Award, which St. Ann’s presents each year to recognize “individuals whose work brings attention to the needs of the community’s voiceless.” We will next bestow Mary’s award to a deserving awardee this coming May 10, 2023, at our annual Hope Blossoms event.

It would be my honor if you would join us for this year’s event, where you can learn more about Mary, her continuing influence on St. Ann’s, and her ongoing relationship to the history-makers currently serving in our community.

Happy New Year from St. Ann’s Center! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas season.

This week, I am reflecting on January as Poverty Awareness Month. This nationwide initiative exists to raise awareness and consciousness about poverty in the U.S., as well as spotlight how different communities are responding to this pervasive problem.

Poverty is a subject close to our hearts at St. Ann’s Center. Since our very beginnings, St. Ann’s has worked closely with women and their children affected by poverty. This continues to be the focus of our mission, 160+ years later.

Today we know that poverty is not the whole story of a family’s life; it is only a chapter. The women we encounter at St. Ann’s have frequently experienced significant material poverty and other traumas, and our hearts break in response to their stories. Yet in time, we also witness these same moms – through access to safe housing, child care, and wraparound supports – achieve newfound stability which allows their families to thrive.

These transformations are helped enormously by our caring Residential Programs staff and our Clinical and Social Work Services team, who partner to create a nurturing atmosphere where moms are supported in reaching their unique goals, on a timeline that makes sense for their unique situation.

You are part of this equation too! It is through your care and support that St. Ann’s Center is able to respond to the challenge of family poverty through creative love-in-action.

Happy December from St. Ann’s Center! We hope you are staying warm and well.

It is incredible how time flies. The year 2022 seems like it just began – and now it is nearly over! Yet with this ending comes the beginning of the holiday season – always a special time of year at St. Ann’s Center as resident mothers and their children bond, celebrate, and enjoy Christmastime together.

While Dec. 25 is still three weeks away, St. Ann’s friends and supporters have already provided us with many reasons for joy and gratitude! I want to especially thank all who participated in St. Ann’s Giving Tuesday campaign earlier this week.
